
Simpson Pavilion
Located in the high desert of central Oregon, the pavilion houses an ice-skating rink and spaces for sports activities usable year-round. The design follows the contours of the terrain, reducing the structure’s visual impact and strengthening its relationship with the landscape.
Tensoforma developed the perimeter ETFE screening using the single-facade Texo system, engineered to keep the pre-tensioning constant and ensure long-term stability. The surface features a digital frosted decoration, which enriches the building’s visual identity and contributes to controlling solar radiation and protecting against the elements.
The aluminum extrusions incorporate a special silicone compound capable of compensating for variations in membrane tension caused by temperature swings, wind, and snow loads. The large roof, supported by steel beams and trusses, appears to float above the translucent envelope. The abundant inflow of natural light improves indoor comfort and reduces the need for artificial lighting.
